We've already spoken about the first episode and how effective it was in introducing the Colossal and Armoured Titan, but another reason the episode - and the show in general - is so good is because it's able to showcase world scale level tragedy perfectly alongside more personal trauma.

For example, just after we see the titans massacre those in Eren's town, Eren and Mikasa rush home to find his mother. However, she's trapped under the rubble of their house and her legs are broken. They try and fail to get her out, and when Hanne decides to run rather than take on a Titan and save all three of them, he grabs the kids and leaves Eren's mother behind.

Then comes one of the most harrowing scenes in the entire series' run, as Eren's mother has her neck snapped before being eaten by the Smiling Titan - who in a weird, messy relationship twist just so happens to be her husband's wife from Marley.

However, it's not her being eaten that sticks in the minds of the show's fans. It's her uttering the words "Please, don't leave me." as her child is whisked away and she is overcome with fear.
