35 Moments That Blew Attack On Titan Fan's Minds

28. Eren Meets His Grandfather

Although AoT is a shonen at its core, it would be foolish not to acknowledge the strong elements of horror the show has too. Of course, giant, naked human-eating titans are petrifying, but the show also does a great job of showcasing the psychological horror and trauma that comes with constant war.

The season three episode, "The Day'', finally gave audiences a look into the early life of Eren's father, Grisha Yeager, and how he gained the power of the Attack Titan. We even spend a bit of time with Grisha's father, who tells him about the subject Ymir and the Great Titan battle that forced Eldian's left outside of Paradis Island to live in internment camps in Marley.

The introduction of Grisha's father pays off brilliantly in the fourth season, as an undercover Eren meets his grandfather for the first time in a hospital in Marley. Following a brief conversation about not leading Falco astray, Eren asks his grandfather if he has any regrets. In a truly heartbreaking moment, his grandfather has a nervous breakdown due to the guilt he feels following the loss of his two children.

It's a gut-wrenching scene as he's clearly broken due to losing his family, yet doesn't even realise his grandson is in front of him.
