4 Great Things And 4 Abominable Things About The Sherlock Special

1. The Mythos

Moriarty says that Sherlock is in 'Way too deep', and this sums up the episode as a whole. Gone are the days when Sherlock was a grounded series about a man who sometimes seemed to be able to make supernatural deductions but which always had a logical explanation. Now he seems to be some sort of supreme being €“ it is almost a science-fiction series. This is the trouble with the success of the show €“ it is now being run as though it is elaborate Fan Fiction.

Sherlock suffers from the baggage it has accumulated over three series, just as Doctor Who suffered until it was reinvigorated in 2005. At that point it (like Sherlock when it first began) was reaching a new audience who would not want to have to understand complicated backstory. With each series, there has been more self-indulgence by the show-runners, meaning that to give Sherlock viable threats the plots have to be more disconnected from reality.

So what do you think? Were you impressed or infuriated by the big reveal? And can Sherlock get back on form when series 4 premiers in early 2017? Let us know in the comments.
