1. People Are Surprised That Glover Is Childish Gambino
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otPxoVQiIGo After originally watching Glover perform on Community, I was soon shown the music video to his song "Freaks and Geeks," and from my first listen I just couldn't stop. I got my hands on as much of his music that was available at the time, as Camp had not been released. I began showing my Community-watching friends, Childish Gambino's work, and while most of them took to the music, all of them were very surprised when I explained to them that the rapper, as well as the producer of the songs they were listening to was the same person who plays Troy Barnes from NBC's Community. While many fans are well aware now, I'm still finding people who start listening to Gambino only to later discover that he is also a successful actor, and vice versa. The ability to have cultivated fans from both his music makes Glover unique in this way, as fans of his music would have looked up his acting performances after realizing that he was also an actor, in the same way many fans of Community would only have realized after that Glover was also a rapper. The reason this makes him unique is that he was able to keep both ventures separate, and while he doesn't make a secret of it. The fact that he hasn't just brought fans of Community over to his raps by trying to connect the two, or overly plug Community in his music to get people who listen to his rap to watch. While others who have tried to conquer the mediums of performance and music have used their fans to from their initial medium to cross to another, key examples of this are several other rappers who have tried to move into the field of acting, such as Tupac, Snoop Dog, Eminem and even 50 Cent had shots at acting careers. Glover has respect for the fans, and when it does come to mentioning his role as an actor on a TV show, it is usually commenting on how people are surprised to find the realization. The dual characters of Donald Glover and Childish Gambino was explored in an interview for the Rolling Stone, in which they got Donald Glover to "interview" Childish Gambino, to a very amusing result with the two almost ending in a fight and clearly disliking each other. I've been lucky enough to see Childish Gambino play at my local Big Day Out Festival, I was not disappointed by his performance, and neither was anyone else. Glover brought an frantic energy to the show, making the most of his smaller stage to really get closer to the people that were crushing each other so see him. His performances are stellar and he keeps up an incredible pace through his entire show. The same can be said of his performance at Lollapalooza, and Glover remains to be one of the best live performers I've seen. Agree? Disagree? Let us know in the comments section below.
