43 New And Upcoming Comic-Book TV Shows: Which Will Triumph?
6. Justice League
Pitch: A few aliens, some enhanced humans, a dude with a magic ring and some kind of bat cosplayer fight crime together. Latest News: Cartoon Network Canada has claimed CN will have a new series out before the end of this presidential administration. Then Cartoon Network proper said it "couldn't confirm" it, without denying it. Odds Of Success: Fairly good, would be better if not for Cartoon Network's pattern of mishandling its classic properties. The original Justice League/Justice League Unlimited series was a crown jewel in DC's animation library, which would make it a challenge to accept any new interpretation (and CN is unlikely to just pick up where the last series left off). Also, there may be issues resulting from starting the series just as the film series is getting under way with Dawn of Justice. Still... it's the Justice League.
5. Dreadstar
Pitch: Vanth Dreadstar, the sole survivor of the entire Milky Way galaxy, and his crew, including cyborg sorcerer Syzygy Darklock, travel to end an ancient war between two evil empires. Latest News: This series was announced as in development from Universal with series creator Jim Starlin in February, and Starlin has returned to writing and drawing the comics series in anticipation of the TV show's launch. Odds Of Success: Fairly good. This crazy 1980s space opera was Jim Starlin cutting loose and having fun. Starlin also gave the world Thanos, that guy who shows up at the end of both Avengers movies. Still, it would require a bit of care to avoid coming off as too cheesy on TV.
4. Outcast
Pitch: Kyle Barnes has been plagued by demonic possession all his life. Reverend Anderson, a preacher with personal demons of his own, accompanies him on a journey to learn why and regain the normal life Kyle lost. A scary story written and executive-produced by Dave Alpert and Robert Kirkman. Latest News: The series has a 10-episode order from Cinemax. Its premiere should be in 2015-2016. Reg E. Cathey is excited about his role, playing opposite Kevin Spacey. And Alpert just gave an upbeat interview. Odds Of Success: Very strong. The book has maintained solid sales for Image and Kirkman's name is a big draw. Add in Cathey and Spacey and it's hard to see this failing.
T Campbell has written quite a few online comics series and selected work for Marvel, Archie and Tokyopop. His longest-running works are Fans, Penny and Aggie-- and his current project with co-writer Phil Kahn, Guilded Age.
