There are many rumours as to why and how exactly Terry Farrell came to leave the role of Jadzia Dax. Some believe she simply chose not to renew her contract in order to accept a role in the Ted Danson sitcom Becker. The truth appears to be more complex than that, however.

Terry Farrell maintains that she left due to issues with producer Rick Berman, whom she later accused of being misogynistic. Farrell says that she requested a reduced episode count on her new contract. Berman denied this request and would then badger her over the phone to make a decision on her future with the show. Berman denies Farrell's account of the negotiations.

Eventually, Farrell told him that they could either write her out or reduce her episode count. So Dax was promptly killed off in the devastating Season 6 finale. In recent years, Farrell has spoken of her heartbreak at leaving the show and of her regret at leaving Dax behind in favour of the less satisfying role of a neurotic chef in Becker.

On the plus side, she also talks of her pride in standing up for herself, noting that if she hadn't done so then she wouldn't have been able to take up the opportunities that were later presented to her.
