3. Monsters - "The Waiting Game"

Monsters Waiting Game Monsters was a 90s anthology series featuring stories about exactly what it said on the tin; monsters. Specifically dodgy costumes, unconvincing makeup and all the special effects one can come to expect from 90's television. There were some pretty creepy tales that slipped through the cracks and make perfect viewing to get you in the Halloween Spirit. Season 3's "The Waiting Game" is exactly that kind of tale. At the height of a cold war, two US soldiers (Tyler and Levitt) responsible for launching nuclear missiles see the monotony of their routine broken when nuclear war breaks out and they are ordered to turn their keys and unleash their nuclear arsenal. Protected in their silo, they survive the nuclear exchange while outside, perpetual darkness and the freezing cold of a nuclear winter begins. They eventually make contact with 2 surviving soldiers in a silo nearby, (Maureen and Garza) one of whom may be the last woman on earth. As they try to figure out what is going on they bond over the radio, sharing their life stories to pass the time and keep each other calm. Garza begins to crack under the pressure and becomes convinced that there are survivors outside. Ignoring the high levels of radiation, he exits the bunker and after a few minutes of wandering about is carried off screaming. Alone, Maureen says she keeps hearing something at the door. Garza returns, calmly asking to be let back into the bunker. Claiming that the geiger counters are wrong and that there are survivors, he convinces her to open the door.....
