3. Jack Shephard - Lost
Dr. Jack Shephard was the protagonist of Lost and the leader of the survivors, of course that means his life was an absolute living hell for the majority of the shows run. Whether it was the others, the smoke monster or Keamy- one problem after another would be thrown in his face, as he tries to keep the group safe and retain his own sanity in the meantime. It was the impossible job for a man that in truth had far too many issues to be leading anybody, but he didnt let it hold him back. Loss and tragedy only furthered his desire to succeed - his desire to get the survivors off of the island- and he did twice. In the opinion of many, Jacks ending was pretty much the only thing that was right about the Lost finale. He sacrificed himself so that his group could escape the island; it was a noble act fitting of his position as the leader. Yet personally, I found the death of Jack to be the thing that bothered me the most about the shows conclusion. He had already gotten off of the island in the fourth season finale, he had thrown away his chance of happiness with Kate to come back, because he knew that was what needed to be done. In my opinion he had sacrificed enough and deserved a happier ending. Regardless of what you think about Jacks fate, I think most can agree that the guy got a raw deal.
As he lay there dying- with only Vincent the dog for company- it was clear that this guy just never caught a break. All he wanted to do was bury his father but he never got the chance. Whilst Kate flew away for the final time, with Sawyer in tow, his life had a lonely end. He never got a real chance of happiness with Kate, he never built a relationship with Claire and his death leaves his mother now without her husband and her only child. He then suffered the further indignity of discovering that his flash-sideways son never really existed and that even in purgatory he couldnt make a marriage last. All in all, I think its fair to say that Jack had a fairly crappy life.
