1. Monkey Dust
Ahhhhh remember when BBC3 had a big budget for new comedies and groundbreaking tv? Well, its been a while, but Monkey Dust was the jewel in the crown from back in 2003. Social commentary at its absolute best, it takes us to the murkiest depths of noughties Britain with no taboo out of reach. Suicide, Murder, Bestiality. The list goes on. Monkey Dust was never far from controversy but initially gained notoriety for the bony, wart covered sexual predator sweating over his keyboard (albeit controversial due to a certain newspapers assumption that, as it was an animation, it was for kids). It does, of course, have a depth far beyond the shock tactics used in some parts and has a huge array of varying characters. From depressed businessmen walking the grey streets with echoes of Blairite sermons, to the latest in reality shows featuring one solitary camera attached to a toilet bowl, immigrants writing letters home about how great the country is with overcrowded transport and discrimination, to middle-class swingers parties with a twist, this show is a beautifully nihilistic view on the way things were. Available on DVD, this is an absolute must watch for those who like their comedy dark, raw, rotten and culturally relevant.
