5 Reasons Why Channel 4 Is Superior To The BBC And ITV (And 2 Reasons Why It Isn't)

3. Its Major Contributions To The British Film Industry

Trainspotting Now this is something that really cannot be praised enough. Film4, the production company established at the same time as the television channel in 1982, has been a saviour of the British film industry in the last couple of decades, providing financing for a number of films and bringing a number of talented directors, writers and actors into the limelight. Most notable amongst these is probably Danny Boyle, known for films such as Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire, both of which Film4 helped to produced. Other great films that they are partially responsible for include This Is England (Shane Meadows), Shame (Steve McQueen, with an excellent performance by Michael Fassbender), Tyrannosaur (Peter Mullan), The Last King Of Scotland (Kevin MacDonald), The Crying Game (Neil Jordan), The Madness Of King George (Nicholas Hytner), Four Lions (Chris Morris), Four Weddings And A Funeral (Mike Newell) and Attack The Block (Joe Cornish), to name but a few. The UK Film Council was closed by the government a couple of years ago with a number of negative consequences for the domestic film industry, but Film4 continues to champion homegrown talent and long may it continue to do so.
