5 Reasons Why You Should Rewatch Batman Beyond

4. Advanced Technology

Batman Beyond Justice League
DC Comics

While the present day Batman series are no strangers to a wide array of gadgets and gizmos that are ahead of their time, Batman Beyond places an extra emphasis on technological growth and how it effects the challenges that Batman has to overcome. Although Terry's Bat-suit is incredibly advanced, the series confronts him with villains equipped with devices beyond belief.

In the season 1 episode "Shriek", the eponymous assassin utilises technology that disrupts sound particles, consequently muting all sound within a given radius. This feat alone demonstrates the series' depiction of the technological "arms-race": as Batman creates new equipment to stop the criminals, the criminals create new equipment to stop Batman.

As well as technologies effects on crime, the series also highlights its growing symbiotic relationship with youth. In the season 2 premiere "Splicers", a new fashion craze of splicing your own DNA with an animal's takes Neo-Gotham by storm. The episode creatively uses these advancements to highlight the feelings of inadequacy, both physical and emotional, felt by people in general, and modern youth in particular. The episode also serves as a reminder that you can take away the technology, but natural emotions are not so easily defeated.
