4. Rube Sofer (Dead Like Me)
Getting hit by a flaming toilet seat which was dropped from a space station, blasted into oblivion, dying and then becoming a grim reaper is a pretty nailed on way to ensure that usually, you are the most interesting person in the room. In Dead Like Me, we follow George Lass, who has experienced the aforementioned tragedy and is doing her best to muddle through a state of limbo as a grim reaper, where she has to claim a pre-set amount of souls before she gets to go to Heaven. Watching over her and a small crew of other ragtag reapers was Rube, he was the one who called the shots and received the post it notes telling him when and where somebody was going to pop their clogs. We learned a bit about the reapers from flashbacks and although Rube's was never fully explained, it was suggested he was a bank robber and quite some time ago. His transgressions while living might have explained why he had been in purgatory for so long. One of my biggest sadnesses in life is that this show only ran for two seasons, it was so witty, sharp and emotionally engaging and we never got to truly explore the depths of Rube's character - but maybe this unrequited not knowing is why I find him so interesting.
