5 Supporting TV Characters Who Become More Interesting Than The Main Star

1. Wesley Wyndham-Price (Angel)

tv5 We're first introduced to Wes in Buffy as a nerdy watcher and when he crops up again in Angel it doesn't appear much about him has changed. Touting himself as a rogue demon hunter, Wes is still very much a dweeb and not taken very seriously as he is introduced to the show. This changes massively as Angel progresses. Wes winds up being responsible for losing Angel's son to a hell dimension. Pryce gets his throat cut and the baby stolen as he tries to protect him from his own father and stop a prophecy - we later learn to be fake - from being fulfilled. As he recovers in hospital, an enraged Angel tries to smother him with a pillow and promises to kill him as he is dragged away. Wes is ex-communicated from Angel Investigations and goes about doing his own thing before eventually finding redemption and returning. He hooks up with Fred and we begin to see a bit of the old Wes come out, but there is one moment in an episode which completely sums up his badass turn to me - shooting what he thinks is his own dad the very second he threatens to hurt Fred. Wes's conflicted character takes an even darker turn when the love of his life is taken over by an Old God and he tries to deal with losing her and living with what she has become. In the last episode of Angel, he dies while attacking a warlock as the entire group tries to take out the Circle of the Black Thorn and send a message to the Senior Partners. For the latter half of this show's run, I found main character Angel slightly stale and it was Wes's dark turn brilliantly acted by Alexis Denisof that really kept me engaged.
