5 Terrible TV Dads

1. "Harry Morgan" Dexter

This guy right here. This has to be the worst a father has ever been to his child in the whole of television history, however for the most part, Harry Morgan, Dexter's adoptive father is actually made out to be somewhat of a hero. A highly respected member of the police department when he was still alive, he is pretty much both Dexter's hero for most of the series, and his biological daughter Debra's role model for most of the series too. Maybe you are a little confused as to why I think this character, who is by far my least favorite part of the show (not just because he's evil either), deserves top spot on this list. Perhaps you even have been fooled by the show into thinking that Harry was a great father to his adoptive psychopathic son Dexter. Well if you do, you a wrong (sorry)... I would argue that Harry is actually the main reason why Dexter is a serial killer as an adult, and for this reason, he is just as much to blame as Dexter is for the hundreds of people Dexter has killed. So despite Locke's father perhaps being the most knowingly evil, Harry is to blame for many more deaths than Anthony Cooper ever was... and he pretty much ruined his adopted sons life, perhaps more so than Anthony ruined Locke's. Still not convinced. Consider this then... I don't know about you, but if my hypothetical son came up to me at a young age and confessed he had an urge to kill things, I would first probably tell him all the reasons why it is wrong to kill. If this didn't work, I would send him to a psychiatrist, and if this still doesn't work, I'd make sure he had serious mental help in a mental institution until he had his murderous habits under control. But Harry Morgan, a man of law and order shockingly, instead basically encourages his son to kill, giving him a set of laws in which to follow (Harry's Code) so that he can indulge in his evil urges but stay out of prison. Whether Dexter was born to be a serial killer or not ( I don't think he was) a fathers job shouldn't be to teach you all the ways you can kill people without getting yourself caught. Harry should have spent much more of his time and energy either by giving more attention to his daughter Debra, or by trying to teach his traumatized son how to feel human emotions and fit into society. A great father could have probably made it so Dexter was able to live a pretty normal, happy adult life, however now it is very unlikely Dexter will even come out of the show alive. The worst thing about him though is how he acts as if he is the wisest man there has ever been, who has all the answers and knows exactly what is best. Instead, he is more of a monster than Dexter is, because he effectively created the monster. Shame on you Harry. Shame on you. Anyone worse that you can think of? Let us in on it!
