Partially resulting from the lack of interesting story arcs in recent times, many of the characters who form the central group in the prison have become quite tired. For example, the gang's sort-of/sort-of-not leader Rick Grimes has really dried up. Back in the days of the first and second seasons we saw far more emotional vulnerability and likability to Rick's character as he struggled to deal not only with his newfound leadership but also with the gradual realisation over Shane's ulterior motives. While I understand that Rick has been forced to retreat within himself to a great extent, it's hard to sympathise with a man who reveals so little and who rarely communicates beyond the use of grunts and mono-syllabics. This criticism can be levelled against nearly all the main characters. While we may be treated to some sweet action sequences, character development has become an increasingly scarce affair more Michael Bay, less Paul Thomas Anderson.
