If Episode 2 ended with the shock of Beverly's execution, the follow-up somehow managed to outdo it with its conclusion. Ethan's wife Theresa and son Ben have now joined him in Wayward Pines, and are just as confused about what they are doing there as he is. At the end of the episode, angry at Ethan after discovering that Kate is in the town too, his family looks to flee the town. Sheriff Pope, however, is having none of it. He cannot tolerate rule-breaking. He pursues them to the enclosing wall and threatens to kill them. Ethan finally catches up to them and, after a struggle, the combination of Ben driving Pope's car and Ethan grabbing his gun finally finishes him off. Yet it is Pope's final warning, not his death, that rings true after the episode ends. "You think you want to know the truth? It's worse than you can possibly imagine." Given that Ethan and his family are trapped in a town where nothing makes sense and people are publicly executed for talking about the past, it seems unlikely that things can actually be any worse. But then Ethan uses Pope's remote to open a gate in the fence and something rapidly crawls in, dragging Pope's body out. Judging by the bestial screams and snarls, as well as the sound of flesh tearing, there is something monstrous beyond the fence. Ethan quickly reseals the entrance. Suddenly it is not just the town that is scary. It is what lies beyond.
