6 Supporting TV Characters Who Stole The Show (And 3 Who Never Should Have)
Those Who Shouldn't Have...
3. Negan - The Walking Dead
Fans waited for Negan's long-teased arrival for a very long time. The iconic Big Bad had raised hell in the comics and, following fan approval of Jeffrey Dean Morgan's casting as the character on the show, anticipation was continually increasing for his debut. And when he first appeared on-screen, he was everything we hoped that he would be.
Killing two of the show's core characters, he swung his barbed-wire bat Lucille around with a vengeance and laid claim to everything that wasn't already his - living up to his comic book counterpart in an instant. Unfortunately, he would never do so again.
The show began to rely on him far too much as, instead of keeping him off-screen for extended periods, the writers continued to feature him rather heavily - with even the promotional material presenting him as an equal to protagonist Rick Grimes. And while this 'forcing Negan down our throats' approach might have worked if it benefited his character, it ended up destroying that eerie aura that once surrounded him.
Off-screen, Negan's reputation spoke volumes as he was the terrifying merciless threat that we knew from the comics. On-screen, however, he quickly evolved into a campy, cartoonish punchline-spewing caricature who made it hard to take anything seriously.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan was great in spite of that, but the problematic storylines and continuous focus on the character watered down his ability to terrify and, in turn, diluted the whole show.
