6 TV Protagonists Constantly Upstaged By Supporting Characters

1. Ted Mosby (How I Met Your Mother)

The top spot is reserved for Ted Mosby, How I Met Your Mother's erstwhile bachelor, because he has spent seven years being upstaged by the rest of the gang. The only exceptions to the rule that Ted is the least interesting of the group are the first season, before we realised that this show would still be going in 2014, and the current one, in which HIMYM has finally had to take steps to resolve his storyline. Of course, those exceptions depend on your generosity towards the show, because HIMYM has stretched its premise to breaking point and Ted's character has suffered accordingly. Barney, who started life as a committed womaniser, is now getting married. Robin, constantly afraid of settling down, is his fiancée. Lily and Marshall have a son together. Ted, once a romantic in search of The One, is... still a romantic in search of The One. Much like Smallville's Clark Kent, his character development has been stunted by the nature of the series, and while everyone around him has realistically matured over the years, he's still stuck in the same old mindset and unable to let go of Robin. Presumably, this will all be resolved at Robin and Barney's wedding in this final season. Ted will once again come to the conclusion that Robin isn't right for him after all (hopefully without confronting her about it at the altar), but maybe this time the writers will allow it to stick. One can only hope.
