6 Ups & 1 Down For Star Trek: Lower Decks 5.4 — A Farewell To Farms

3. UP — Mariner The Unforgettable; Mariner The Mindful

Given the epithet, few have forgotten Kahless (either of them) whether they like it or not, and that in spite of the many "thorn murders". Everyone, on the other non-bloodied hand, will remember Beckett Mariner, simply because they want to.

That might sound like a eulogy, but we're not crying out to Sto-vo-kor yet. It is merely our own reminder that, in the form of Star Trek: Lower Decks, we have fewer and fewer episodes left with this character. Season five has already been particularly good to Mariner, and A Farewell To Farms continues that trend.

Following on from Shades of Green most notably, the roles are reversed once more for Mariner and Boimler on Qo'noS. He is the one launching himself headlong into danger (and at a giant targ), even offering himself up for sacrifice at one point. Mariner, by comparison, is the more mindful, the more considered of the pair.

Mariner's also on more of a mission this episode than merely the return of a Klingon skull. Rather than breaking every rule in the book, except perhaps for the Prime Directive (see Seán for more on that), to get the scans of the anomaly she needs, Mariner goes along willingly with Klingon tradition (as obscure and deadly as it is) and helps a friend in the process. After all, it was that 'friend,' Ma'ah, who helped her come to terms with her own emotional and professional struggles in The Inner Fight.
