7 Dangerous Stereotypes In Glee

4. "Sensitive Jock"

This is probably Glee's go-to stereotype, and one of the most boring and overused stereotypes in TV history. It's as if TV producers really think we are so stupid and couldn't possibly work out on our own that some jock football players can actually be nice guys. It wouldn't be so bad if Glee was subtle about it either, but the way they play up Finn's nice guy persona can get very irritating, especially considering his if far from the nicest in the cast. Finn gets all the credit on the show for being the nicest guy, and the writers obviously consider Finn to be their protagonist, their hero, but he can actually be pretty harsh. He started off the series as a bully (though a nicer one- if nice bullies even exist): when all his friends were throwing Kurt into a trash-bin, Finn allowed them to do it, but would hold items of Kurt's clothing so they wouldn't get damaged. His behaviour could only be considered nice in relative terms, and since then he has also called Kurt a homophobic term and outed Santana before she was ready. What a hero!? All this considered, I don't hate the character, and he has changed considerably, however people love to give all the credit to horrible people who change as apposed to people who have always been nice guys. Artie, Sam and Mike for example are much more heroic than Finn ever was. Puck also fits into this character mold, as does his brother Jake introduced into Season 4. In fact, stupidly, every single male member (at least most of them) appear to be members of the football team, and are therefore all sensitive jocks. In reality, this is entirely ridiculous- even wheel-chaired Artie is in the team. If they aren't all in the team, they spend a lot of their male bonding time in the locker-rooms.

I am a recent Screenwriting for Film and Television graduate from the UK. I am an unashamed geek who loves everything Marvel, and anything Joss Whedon has ever touched (except for maybe Alien Resurrection and Titan A.E). My current favorite TV shows are Breaking Bad, Family Guy, House of Cards, Game of Thrones, American Horror Story, Homeland and Glee. I look forward to debating things with all of you in the future.
