Watching The Walking Dead in 2014, its easy to forget exactly how irritating Carl was in the first couple of seasons, and how much the audience hoped hed go the way of Sophia. Actually, perhaps thats a little inaccurate they didnt just want him bitten off screen, but on camera and in close-up full glorious high-def technicolour. In 3D, if possible. A good part of this was due to the inevitable pitfalls of including a pre-teen boy in the main cast of a show as brutal and callous as this. With the stakes so high for the protagonists, and with gruesome bitey death constantly at their throats, viewers found it galling for their hero Rick to continually have to babysit an increasingly erratic and sulky little brat. No one watching The Walking Dead was going to relate to a twelve-year-old boy especially one who through inaction would have a hand in the death of Dale, and whose gunshot destroying the undead Shane would attract a herd of walkers to the farm, ruining their safe haven and splitting the group. Add to that the fact that young actor Chandler Riggs had to step into the role and into the show as a naïve ten year old. Very few actors of that age have the chops to make an irritating character sympathetic and relatable. Thankfully, Carl has grown and blossomed into a more mature, capable teenager, just as Riggs himself has grown up with the show and become a fine actor. Incredibly, when you consider how the character began, his developing relationships with his father and with Michonne are now two of the better reasons to watch the show.
