7 Huge Mistakes Made By Game Of Thrones Characters
2. Ned Telling Cersei He Knows The Truth
Perhaps the noblest character in the entire series, Ned Stark never wanted power. He reluctantly accepted Roberts offer to become the Hand of the King because he feared for Roberts safety. Robert even played on Neds nobility to get Ned to say yes. Once down in Kings Landing, all of Neds good intentions get thrown out the window though as he quickly comes to see the nest of vipers the Iron Throne sits within. At every turn Ned is shown the worst nature of the people around him, whether its Roberts inability to rule with any wisdom or the seemingly endless plots and counter-plots emanating from the members of the small council. At different moments he mistakenly puts his trust in Littlefinger, Pycelle (a truly despicable character who at times gets overlooked), and Varys, who perhaps could have been a true ally of his had Ned lived. But at no point does Ned ever trust Cersei. As he continues to dig deeper into the death of Jon Arryn, Ned repeatedly is confronted with the schemes and lies of the queen. Her loyalty is to her children, her house, and herself. It could not be more apparent that Cersei is not someone you should ever turn your back on, which is why it is so hard to see Ned make the staggering mistake of confronting Cersei and revealing that he has discovered that Jaime, not Robert, is Joffreys father. And the worst part is he does it out of concern for her and her childrens safety. Once Robert finds out the truth, Cersei's days are numbered and it wont be long before that wrath is turned on Joffrey and his siblings as well. Ned thinks hes doing the right thing, the honourable thing, by telling her what he knows. Up to this point there is still the chance that Cersei could avoid the truth coming to light and perhaps find a way to remove Ned Stark as a foe without it coming to blood being spilt. But after this moment, theres no going back for either one of them and Neds fate has been sealed. What does honor and nobility get you in Westeros? Thrown in the dungeon and decapitated by your own sword.
I've been a huge sci-fi fan ever since going to see "Star Wars" at the tender age of 3 (and yes I actually do remember it! I love pretty much any intelligent and entertaining film and television series (some of my all time favorites are 2001, Lawrence of Arabia, Battlestar Galactica [SyFy], and The West Wing). Must thank the stars above for such things as HBOGO and Netflix (Am thoroughly enjoying Ripper Street btw). I've also been an avid comic book collector since childhood. I earned a bachelor's degree in creative writing with a second emphasis in film studies from Florida State University (Go Noles!) and definitely enjoy sitting back and watching pretty much any sports. I wish I had a joke to end with, but I don't so I'll simply say "The End."
