7 Reasons John Oliver Is Britain's Greatest Export
7. The Daily Show
Oliver's first visit to America was for his audition for The Daily Show, a satirical news programme hosted (at the time) by Jon Stewart. They hired him and he moved to the U.S. in 2006, shifting his life so abruptly that he was flying in from London on a Sunday and making his first appearance on the show on the Monday. He stayed with the show for over 7 years, winning 3 Emmys for his writing and earning huge popularity for his role as "Senior British Correspondent". When Stewart took extended leave in 2013, Oliver was the obvious choice for his temporary replacement, and manned the host's desk admirably. Oliver used his befuddled foreigner persona to great effect on The Daily Show, managing to disarm his interview subjects with extremely English manners and affected ignorance. His vox pops were legendary and his ability to remain impassive in the face of outrage truly impressive. He was at his absolute best when diving into uniquely American issues, such as the passionate debate surrounding gun control, as he offered an outsider's perspective rarely seen on American TV. Oh yeah- and he was incredibly funny. Absurdly funny.
Brydie is an Australian writer and performer living in London and she complains exactly the same amount about the weather as every other Australian living in London. Yes, that is her natural lip colour, no, she will not be taking any further questions at this time.
