6. From The Twisted Mind Of Guillermo del Toro
Guillermo del Toro, despite some people's criticisms of his filmmaking, has a fantastical imagination. The director behind Pan's Labyrinth, the Hellboy series and Pacific Rim, del Toro is famous for his visionary work in the fantasy realm of monsters. The Pale Man from Pan's Labyrinth (played by Doug Jones who has also been cast in The Strain) is one of the most horrific creatures in cinema history. Hellboy 2's Angel of Death is another terrifying monstrosity in a movie full of unique beasts. Pacific Rim featured an array of giant kaiju that terrorized Earth. There is no questioning the man's track record when it comes to envisioning otherworldy nightmares. This also won't be del Toro's first foray into the world of vampires. As director of Blade 2 he tackled a similar subject matter with the story of a species of uber-vampires known as Reapers that feed on regular vamps. The movie met with mixed reactions from fans and critics but there's no denying the Reapers were menacing demons which should be a hint of the direction of The Strain. Thus far, del Toro has directed the pilot and plans to direct as many episodes as his schedule will allow.
