An article about women in comedy could never be complete without the show "Girls". It's pretty self explanatory why (just look at the title), but for the sake of those who were living under a rock the past couple of years, I'll elaborate. And just to be clear, I'm guilty of jumping late on the Lena Dunham express, but now, I am fully on board. The 27 year old New Yorker was almost unknown to the world before her meteoric rise to stardom following the creation of "Girls". But that's what happens when you create a phenomenon. According to the Guardian, this show is "probably the smartest, funniest, most place-defining, generation-defining, now-defining TV show around". And this is just one of many overwhelmingly praising quotes floating around. To top that, Dunham has received eight nominations for Emmy Awards and won two Golden Globe Awards for the comedy. This show deals with the issues of being a 20 something woman in the big city. Dunham (who also wrote and produced), portrays Hannah, an aspiring author. When her parents announce they will no longer financially support her, she is left to care for herself in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Along with a group of her female friends, she navigates her twenties, "one mistake at a time". This show has been compared to this generation's "Sex and The City", but younger, and cruder. This comedy is straight up in your face about anything woman, and makes no apologies, whether it be talking about STDs or joking about abortions. More please. Seen a good women-led comedy that didn't make the list, but really should have? Write about it in the comment section below. Sharing is caring.
