8. I Married Dora
I Married Dora was a short-lived American TV show from the late 1980s that revolved around a green card marriage. Basically, there was this white guy named Peter with two kids and a housekeeper. Everything was running smoothly until the housekeeper, who is an illegal alien from El Salvador, is about to be deported. Knowing how hard it is to find a good housekeeper in Los Angeles (sarcasm), boss man does pretty much the only thing any normal person would do in that scenario: marry the help. This is, of course, a federal crime. Putting that aside for a moment, the show mainly centered around the romantic relationship that may or may not develop between the two characters. It also dealt with the implications of Immigration potentially discovering their sham marriage. As hard as it may be to believe, the show got low ratings and was cancelled midway through the first season. A common tale, perhaps, but that's when things started to get weird. In the last episode, Peter gets a two year job offer in Bahrain. He's just about to board the plane, when he suddenly walks back to his wife and kids. Looking at the ticket, he tells them that it's cancelled. What, the flight? No - OUR SERIES! And on that day, the art of breaking the fourth wall was redefined, and we stood in awe.
How It Should Have Ended...Just go with dignity, man.
