Boasting a lore you could only fit in at least ten encyclopedia-sized volumes, and an incredible 55 years on and off the small (and occasionally big) screen, Doctor Who is a show in its own league.

The BBC's sci-fi behemoth has an impossibly huge fan base, always picking apart the tiniest details in the oldest episodes, always coming up with new theories from new trailers, and always, always waiting for the next series.

However, the trivia absolutely outweighs that rabid fanbase, and even the most knowledgeable of Whovians aren't always red-hot on absolutely every detail, fact, and figure. So if you're either a newbie or a veteran of the show, let's take a look at a few things you might not know...

8. The Lead Actors Inadvertently Follow 'The Troughton Rule'

When the First Doctor, William Hartnell, left the show in 1966, the concept of regeneration wasn't something at all present in any fans' mind. It was quite the gamble for the BBC, and a monumental challenge for the next Doctor, Patrick Troughton.

The Second Doctor was a sure-fire hit, and the concept of regeneration was never questioned again. However, when 1969 reared its head, Troughton was becoming uncomfortable with the work, and was concerned for his future in the acting profession if he was constantly associated with the role of the Doctor.

This fear of being typecast ultimately led him to leave the role, and this fear has loomed over every other actor who has played the character since. Both Jon Pertwee and Christopher Eccleston cited that fear as a prominent factor into their decisions for leaving the role, and is something future actors take into account when first accepting the role. If you play the Doctor, you are the Doctor.

Also the go-to for Doctor Who, and could tell you why Sans Serif fonts are better than most. Still occasionally tap dances under the desk.
