8 Missing Characters From A Song Of Ice And Fire That Should Have Appeared In Game Of Thrones
7. Ser Arys Oakheart
One criticism of Game of Thrones could be leveled at the show's portrayal of the Kingsguard. Bar a few of the top billed main characters, the Kingsguard who appear in the show are portrayed as anonymous, silent thugs.
Little to no insight into their personality or the circumstances behind their appointment is given. The importance of the prestigious ancient organization is thoroughly emphasized through the books and the reader gains insight into the circumstances or accomplishments that earned the men who serve in it a place in this elite unit.
Ser Arys Oakheart would have resolved this to an extent with some much needed character diversity. Despite serving in Joffrey's Kingsguard, Arys is a kind, noble knight uneasy with the evil nature of the loathsome King he serves. The only Kingsguard member brave enough to protest Joffrey's orders to beat Sansa, he does so as gently as possible even when forced to indulge Joffrey's vile perversions.
Arys is eventually sent to Dorne as the protector of Princess Myrcella; his inclusion would have provided a much needed injection of interest to the dismal Dornish storyline. In a tale of heartbreak and betrayal, he is seduced by Princess Arianne despite his best attempts to honorably resist, and caught up in a conspiracy to install Myrcella on the Iron Throne which ultimately costs him his life.
Arys' moving tale would have made for intense viewing thanks to a complex character and a thoroughly engaging plot.
