8 Mysteries From DS9 And Voyager That Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Should Answer

3. Are The Klingons Still Friendly?

The Klingons have been a mainstay in the Star Trek Universe and Star Trek: Discovery's first season spent a lot of time reshaping our view of the warrior race. Star Trek: Picard's first season meanwhile has completely ignored their existence.

In the Star Trek: Deep Space seventh season episode "Tacking Into The Wind", Ezri Dax had a bleak outlook on the empire: "The Klingon Empire is dying , and I think it deserves to die... I see a society that is in deep denial about itself. We're talking about a warrior culture that prides itself on maintaining centuries-old traditions of honor and integrity, but in reality it's willing to accept corruption at the highest levels."

That's an astute deconstruction of an alien culture that we've pretty much taken for granted for Star Trek's 50 plus years. Just how have they sustained their empire behaving the way they behave? DS9 seemed to be setting up a new path for the Klingon Empire, with the likes of the old guard like Gowron being killed and more progressive figures like Martok taking their place.

So did the Klingon Empire ever evolve after DS9? Both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager's finales featured an alternate future where the Klingons were clearly at odds with the Federation, did that ever to come pass?
