6. The Death Of Oberyn

The Mountain and the Viper | Season 4 | Episode 8 This may sound a little strange but Game of Thrones is increasing realism on TV. It might not make sense immediately, what with this being fantasy and all, but its true. In most other shows, the good guy always wins, even if his opponent is 8 feet tall and make exclusively from chain mail and muscle. In Game of Thrones, if a character comes up against a giant, or a dragon, or the most fearsome warrior in the land, they lose. No scene exemplifies this better than the battle between Oberyn Martell and The Mountain. The Mountain is a rapist and a child murderer, so of course we want Oberyn to win. Even as we get a good look at the size difference between the two of them we think he's got a fighting chance. It doesn't work out that way of course. The bigger man wins. If you're an underdog, that has to be played out in the scene. Of course the underdog can still win - just look at Tyrion at Blackwater - but the victories for the little guy are kept relatively low to keep us guessing. Leave it to a fantasy TV show to keep our expectations in check.
