8 Things Yellowjackets Does Better Than Lost

6. The Power Dynamics

Yellowjackets Lost
Showtime

Lost was a very macho affair. The ongoing leadership battle between handsome doctor Jack, charming con-man Sawyer and mysterious sage Locke formed the crux of the character drama. It was a hierarchy that was also a shallow meritocracy, Jack was automatically assumed to be the leader because he had the most respectable job. While Lost interrogated that meritocracy throughout the series, Yellowjackets immediately subverts it.

If Yellowjackets was Lost then Jackie, the captain of the soccer team, would automatically become the leader of the survivors. Instead, she's presented as a mere figurehead - she's not even particularly good at soccer. As the survivors try to make sense of their new lives, Jackie is content to sit back and wait for help to arrive, which leads to tensions within the group.

The two people who immediately show themselves to have leadership qualities are Taissa and Misty. Taissa is the true power behind the team, conspiring to get rid of their weakest player before the tournament. It's she who takes it upon herself to lead the group from the crash site towards potential civilization rather than impotently wait for help. Meanwhile, the bullied and belittled Misty shows herself to have excellent survival skills, quickly earning the trust of those who once spread baseless gossip about her.
