8 Ups & 1 Down For Star Trek: Lower Decks 5.8: Upper Decks
1. Cetacean Observations
As ever, there are more Easter Eggs in Upper Decks than you could comfortably cram into the whale pool aboard the Cerritos. Genesis got a major nod — the episode, not the rock band, although who knows with that sousaphone — as did The Motion Picture on a pumpkin! We'll Always Have Date Night on the holodeck, too. Admiral Freeman's anniversary surprise was a trip to the Cerritos and then to Paris.
Of course, Paris is forever and most famous for Jean-Luc's favourite café, but the Office of the President of the United Federation of Planets has also been located there. That was where we met Jaresh-Inyo, the (real) Grazerite president, in Homefront and Paradise Lost.
Back to 'date night,' there have been so many on the holodeck, it's hard to keep track of the stray photons. Those 'space cows' — the Buhgoon — might trigger something in Harry Kim after Tom Paris' Fairhaven prank in Spirit Folk. We were also reminded of Kirsten Beyer's short story Isabo's Shirt in the anthology Distant Shores. In that, the 'date' between Janeway and Chakotay is in holographic Venice, not Paris, but that was just as romantic (for a bit).
