8 Ups & NO Downs From Star Trek: Lower Decks 5.6 - Of Gods And Angles

4. UP — SquAaron The Circle

Firstly, it's one giant, and also teeny-tiny, UP for that name. Of course the (we assume first) child of a Cube and an Orb was going to be called "SquAaron"! What else could it have been? Cu-Ben? Squ-Aiden? In shape, SquAaron also reminded us (though not precisely) of the Gömbök — a magical bit of geometry which, when made into an object, is, in essence, always self-righting i.e. returns to a stable equilibrium point by shape alone.

There's little stable about having a newborn. As Quadralon noted in a moment of hilarious, and understandable, panic: "What is this? What do I do? I've been a parent for five minutes." Probably just gotta pick up the pyramidal poo! Naturally, we could all see the final 'twist' (particularly the Quadralon/Radiara coupling) coming an Orb's square mile off. If not a surprise, it was just as delightful.

Equally pleasing, compared to a certain Klingon-centric episode this season, was that both A and B plots were neatly intertwined. By the episode's end, each had come full circle, very painfully for Boimler, but less so for the Orbs and the Cubes, and for Ensign Olly (brig or no brig). A child to bring peace is not a new story, but here, it's one that works. Well, just so long as you don't give him any juice!
