9 TV Shows That Left Huge Unanswered Questions Behind
5. Merlin: Was Arthur Ever Reborn?
The BBC's Merlin show ended on needlessly a grim note after five seasons, with the protagonist left alone for all of eternity. Seriously, what sort of a conclusion is that?
The series introduced young versions of the eponymous wizard, King Arthur, and Mordred and revealed how they became legendary figures. It steadily improved during the course of its run, and the Beeb pulled the plug just when it was getting interesting.
Season 5's conclusion sees Arthur die in battle, and it's pretty harrowing since he slowly expires in the arms of his friend Merlin, who doesn't possess the magic to save him. But the sorcerer is convinced the great king will one day return to this mortal coil, offering the audience a glimmer of hope in an otherwise bleak finale.
The next scene, however, is an ancient-looking Merlin in modern times, still waiting for his friend to come back from the dead. He cuts a lonely, dishevelled figure, suggesting there's nothing down for him but an eternity of isolation and despair.
They don't come much wiser than Merlin, though, so if he's so certain Arthur is destined to return, does that mean this came to pass eventually? Let's hope so, because the alternative is almost too depressing to bear.
