Deadline report that ABC are developing a TV series based on William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, with director
Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) in talks to direct the potential pilot, scripted by
Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center). ABC have only ordered a script at the moment, but they perhaps want to emulate the success of period dramas like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire, but mix in the teenage angst/romance that has proven popular in movies like Twilight. But would this drama be brave enough to stick to a period setting, or instead go for a cheaper contemporary version,
a la 10 Things I Hate About You (which was a loose update of Shakespeare's The Taming Of The Shrew)?
