There are dozens of reasons why Asylum is a fan-favourite season. The ongoing mystery of Bloody Face, the horrific acts inflicted by a sinister former Nazi doctor, and a phenomenal ensemble cast that brought the twisted tale of Briarcliff to life.

One of these standout performances was show veteran Lilly Rabe as wholesome nun Sister Mary Eunice. Or at least, she was wholesome, until she was possessed by a demon during an exorcism, which transformed her into a manipulative murderer and major antagonist.

But what if she wasn’t really possessed? Near the start of the season we see Eunice succumbed to a demon, which is signified with her eyes turning yellow. However, some fans have theorised that she isn’t completely possessed; rather, the demon has given her the lease on life she’s always craved.

The most telling evidence for this theory lies within her eyes. Whereas the possessed patient’s eyes were constantly yellow, Mary’s eyes only turn yellow on rare occasions. Amongst other significant moments, a sequence in which she dances to the song “You Don’t Own Me” is often read by viewers as her confronting her religious conformity.

Re-watching Asylum with this theory in mind makes watching Mary Eunice even more fascinating.
