American Horror Story: How Apocalypse Saved The Show

2. It Returned The Show To Its Roots

American Horror Story has a unique tone, which makes it unlike anything else on television. It's both scary and incredibly camp at exactly the same time, and can often be comedic - in spite of its status as a horror series. While the show has tried to change things up over the years, this tone has largely been present in almost every season, with only Roanoke deviating - a decision that paid off for that respective season.

However, since Freak Show, the writers have become a little bit more indulgent and, as result, the show has often ventured into a much sillier style of comedy. The entire season of Cult was plagued with a really bizarre comedic tone, which made it hard to take seriously. Perhaps this was the writers' intention, as that particular season was meant to satirically attack the current state of the world, but nonetheless it felt less like AHS and more like Scream Queens.

Apocalypse rectifies this, returning the show to its usual tone, ensuring that the perfect combination of camp and horror is present the whole way through the season.
