10. The Bad Girl Closet

Adelaide was born with Down Syndrome and her only dream was to one day be considered a 'pretty girl' by society's standards. If that wasn't poignant enough, her mother Constance (Jessica Lange) had shunned her from the public since her birth, simply because she looked different. Her own mother is ashamed of her physical features which she deems as 'monstrous' and as punishment, Addie's mother locks her in the 'bad girl closet' when she has been naughty. This closet is a room full of mirrors in which she must be surrounded with her own reflection. Constance forces her, in a cruel and spiteful manner, to recognise her own reflection and how she will never be as pretty as the other girls. Because Addie has been raised to understand that her disability makes her ugly, she screams in terror whenever Constance inflicts this harsh and unfathomable punishment upon her.
