Another 20 Nostaglic TV Theme Tunes We Just Can’t Let Go

2. Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5kcBxL7-qI&noredirect=1 It's hard to describe just how excited people were when Star Trek was relaunched on television screens in 1987. The summer previous had seen record attendance for Star Trek 4; The Voyage Home, and while that wasn't technically in the interests of die hard Trekkies, it did find an audience with a whole new generation of fans, eager to explore just how magical this world of exploration and science could be. Gene Rodenberry had realised his dream of bring this unique creation back to audiences on a more permenant platform and did everything he could not to waste the oppurtunity. Despite not featuring any of the original cast of Star Trek and being set some 70+ years in the future (I'm sure somebody will correct me on that) there's no denying that TNG has become just as much of a cultural icon as the original series - even if it did nothing but to serve for lengthy debates over Kirk vs. Picard. The opening credits begin with the now-famous "Space: The Final Frontier" monologue recited by Patrick Stewart, in place of William Shatner, and it's almost like 'The Liberty Bell' meets Star Trek; Dennis McCarthy reused part of Jerry Goldsmith's work on the theme from Star Trek; The Motion Picture in 1979, where the fanfare precedes Goldsmith's theme. In fact, all the Star Trek feature films to date use the fanfare at some point within the film, even the new re-imagined series of films created by JJ Abrams. Turn it up loud, grab that imaginary baton and begin!
