Arrow Season 8 Review: 11 Ups & 2 Downs From 'Green Arrow And The Canaries'
4. Mia's Character Journey
One of the most recurring criticisms of the Mia Smoak character was that she borrowed all of Oliver's broodiness without possessing any of his charm - and, for many fans, that made her unlikable. The problem was that she'd continually make mistakes, learn from them and then act out again when called out on them later down the line. This Mia, however, is a completely different kettle of fish.
One of the backdoor pilot's main goals was to establish Mia as a strong character that could believably take on her father's mantle. It managed to do that by having the Crisis rewrite her life - as she became a successful socialite that just about everyone loved. However, the real hook to her character was that this was ultimately her undoing - as she had so many options and couldn't find her true calling. Little did she know it would come in the form of heroism.
Sure, she kicked back and grunted her way through a few moments upon remembering everything - but this time, it all felt warranted - because we saw her journey unfold before our eyes. This was a Mia that we could all support, champion and root for. And now, hopefully, we'll get the chance to do just that.
