Arrow Season 8 Review: 11 Ups & 2 Downs From 'Green Arrow And The Canaries'
8. The Setting Enhances EVERYTHING
Alarm bells began to go off for some fans when they heard the spin-off would be set in the future. This was for a multitude of different reasons, ranging from the fact that it would separate it from the rest of the Arrowverse shows to the reminder that the 2040 flash-forwards weren't the strongest aspects of Season 7. But upon watching the backdoor pilot, it's clear that this isn't going to be a concern for Green Arrow and The Canaries.
While the original show's flash-forwards were hindered by the mysteries they couldn't talk about until we saw them unfold in the present-day timeline, Green Arrow and The Canaries uses the events we already saw take place in both Arrow and Crisis On Infinite Earths. As a result, it's easier to follow - and perhaps more importantly, it's easier to understand why the characters behave in the ways that they ultimately do.
Purely from a visual perspective, the futuristic setting of Green Arrow and The Canaries allows it to come to life in a way that other Arrowverse shows don't. It's both eerie and funky, stunning and haunting; and it ultimately complements the story that the writers are trying to tell - setting it apart from every other show in its genre.
