Batman: The Animated Series: 10 Most Disturbing Episodes

1. Over The Edge

And here it is: The New Batman Adventures episode that takes viewer expectations and drops them into a meat grinder.

Over the Edge does everything it can to leave the audience shocked and disturbed. From the action-packed opening in which Commissioner Gordon leads a team of heavily armed police officers to storm the Batcave, to the horrific moment in which Batgirl, a.k.a. Barbara Gordon, falls to her death from atop a skyscraper.

That's right, Batgirl dies. Graphically! We see her look of sheer terror as she plummets to her death, before she crashes violently onto Commissioner Gordon's car, bouncing onto the road, bloodied and bruised. Then, as she lays dying in the Commissioner's arms, she says the one word with the power to rip his world apart: "Dad." Realising that he is holding his dying daughter, Gordon is shattered and he lands the blame squarely at Batman's feet. There is no doubt that this is the most gut-wrenching WTF moment in the entire Batman DCAU canon.

Things only get worse from here though, with Gordon figuring out Batman's identity, leading to the assault at the beginning of the episode. He continues to become increasingly unhinged as he tries to bring in his old ally, leading to him making a deadly alliance with Bane.

To say exactly how this episode resolves would be a disservice to anyone who hasn't witnessed this masterpiece. If you haven't seen this episode, remedy that right now.
