Throughout Battlestar Galactica, a central question concerns the nature of the image of Number Six that regularly “haunts” Gauis Baltar. Is she a figment of Baltar’s imagination, the result of a computerized implant in Baltar’s brain, or something else? As the series progresses, “Head Six” (as she’s often known) displays increased amounts of emotion and autonomy, indicating that she is more than just an impression in Baltar’s mind.

But none of that prepares us for Downloaded, in season two, when we see the aftermath of the attack on the Colonies from the point of view the Number Six who helped make it happen. After resurrecting and being hailed as a hero, she finds herself visited by a similar mental impression—but of Gaius Baltar. His influence helps to shift her perspective of the attack, leading to a change in the Cylon’s long-term strategy.

Later, Six and Baltar find themselves together in the series finale, where they are both visited by Head Six and Head Baltar simultaneously. It’s only then that unambiguously clear to both the characters and the viewers that these entities are fully independent living beings, and not just projections (although their exact nature is never fully disclosed.)
