Batwoman Season 1 Review: 5 Ups & 2 Downs From ‘Mine Is A Long And A Sad Tale’

1. Rushed And Unrealistic Reactions

One thing particularity bothersome about this week's installment was the rather head-scratching reactions and conclusions we got from some of the characters. Now, this was more of a subtle thing but given that the episode (and the show itself) had been built around - or building up to - some of these reactions, they were rather off-putting.

Take Kate's reaction to Alice being the Skin Pirate. She refused to believe she was taking the skin off bodies because "It's too sick, even for her." Oh yeah because violently killing people at tea parties and throwing people off roofs isn't sick? Denial is one thing, but this came off as a half-baked and rushed attempt at it in order to force the narrative onwards - and not at all like something Kate would say.

Then you have Sophie's bland reaction to Commander Kane's revelation about Catherine's lies. "Damn," she said in an expressionless moment, "So Kate was right this whole time." And again, we're left wondering when these characters will behave like real people.

This isn't a critique of Ruby Rose or Meagan Tandy - they did what they could with the material they were given. But the show's insistence on rushing through its moments instead of letting them breathe would allow for longer, genuine and more authentic reactions.

Now, for the positives...
