The great difficulty in making Better Call Saul for Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould was always going to be making a story that respected Breaking Bad, yet didn't tread on its toes.
At this point, with the final season still yet to air, most would agree it was mission successful for the spin-off prequel. Better Call Saul has built a tale that informed on what Breaking Bad became, and also expanded the world that is Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Better Call Saul moved away from the world of drug lords and meth dealers to more affluent and wider-reaching places in society. Now we have gone from the drug dens to the courtrooms, we have seen the battleground that lawyers inhabit as they try to better one another in judicial combat.
There has still been the usual brilliant storytelling by the creative team, however, it has come from a totally different game than the one shown in Breaking Bad. Yet, Gilligan and Gould found a way to retain the best characters and even introduce some new ones.
The greatest asset that Better Call Saul has is its element of surprise, you never really know what is coming next, and the ability the show has maintained to believably bring in old favourites in a new context has been thrilling. But just how closely have you been watching?
