Black Mirror: 6 Best & 6 Worst Inventions
1. WORST - Memory Reading
Have you ever witnessed a crime and been asked to give a statement? Notice how hard it is? Memory is faulty, already coloured by our prejudice and bias, easily betrayed by limited language. As soon as the words leave our lips, they become lies (of omission, of inaccuracy) because we cannot make them into the whole truth.
So it is that Crocodile presents the Recaller, a device used to access the recent memories of those who witness crimes and piece together a fully accurate picture of what happened. This is not such a good thing for the main character of the episode who witnesses a crime literally seconds after committing a murder (itself committed to help protect the covering up of an accidental death from fifteen years previous) and soon finds herself spiralling into a series of other murders.
While the tech seems like a good thing for society, it would be seconds before this was used to invade someone's privacy, whether by stealing their passwords or uploading revenge porn. The world simply isn't responsible enough for a device like the Recaller to be in the wild.
