Black Mirror: Ranking Every Episode From Worst To Best
7. The National Anthem
The first ever Black Mirror episode made it clear from the off that this was a show unlike any other on TV. The National Anthem plays out like a serious political thriller, as the Prime Minister and his cabinet is forced to deal with a terrorist who has kidnapped the princess and is making an extreme demand. The trademark Black Mirror twist is that this demand is totally ridiculous - he says that he will kill her unless the PM has sex with a pig on live television.
The genius of this one is how Brooker manages to take this crass idea and play it completely straight. Just like the general public in the episode, we are glued to the screen as the incredibly tense, sickening and weirdly believable tale unfolds.
Of course, this episode is also notable for possibly getting closer to the truth than we realised at the time. But let's not get into that now...
