Black Mirror Season 4: Every Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

4. Crocodile

Every series of Black Mirror has one episode that's notably bleaker than the rest, and for season four it's unquestionably the hauntingly grim Crocodile.

Andrea Riseborough is fantastic as a hotshot businesswoman whose shady past starts catching up with her. For almost the entire first half, there's little in the way of Black Mirror's usual vaguely-futuristic tech, but when an insurance agent (a brilliant Kiran Sonia Sawar) makes contact with Riseborough's character and wants to use a "memory dredger" device to probe into her mind, things pick up considerably.

John Hillcoat (The Road, Lawless) was a fantastic choice to direct this Icelandic-set episode, emphasising its literally chilly bleakness, all the way up to a stunningly dark finale that surely ranks among the series' most blackly comic to date.
