1. In Spite Of Everything, He Only Ever Decides To Leave Cooking Behind In Season 5
No-one can argue that Jesse hasn't been through a lot on Breaking Bad. He has witnessed the death of people close to him, he has both directly and indirectly caused the deaths of others, he has been disowned, manipulated and experienced every emotion in the book. Yet despite having several opportunities to leave the meth business, it's only during Season 5 after Todd shoots Drew Sharp (the kid on the dirt bike) that he decides to do so. People often see Jesse as the developing antithesis of Walt insofar as when he gets more engrossed in the thrill of building a meth empire, Jesse becomes more disillusioned to it. He throws away his money, shows little regard for his safety and the atrocities he and Walt commit have a far greater impact on Jesse's psyche than Walt's. Yet with all that being said, after Jane's death he goes back to cooking meth, after shooting Gale point blank he goes back to cooking Meth and after Gus has half his face blown off and Brock is poisoned, he still goes back to cooking meth. Now granted, on some of those occasions he is emotionally distraught, but even as late as season 5 he is happy to be in the position he's in. Who can forget that rare 'cute' scene in which Walt and Jesse stand behind their new 'Fumigation Crew' as Mike lays down the law?Even after all he has seen and caused, even after going on this apparent journey of revelation, there is an obvious sense of pride in that moment. The fact that it took the death of the most innocent of people, a child, to bring Jesse to his senses means that to me he hasn't been on a journey at all. Crucify Walter all you want, he accepted that innocent and undeserving people may have to be sacrificed to build the empire he desired. For Jesse to be in this deep without recognising the dangers involved with what he was doing, again just demonstrates a complete naivety in his character. So there you have it. It turns out Jesse is not the second coming of Christ! He is for the most part naive, incompetent and uninformed which is the total opposite of Walt. Still you know what they say, just like magnets, opposites attract... Yeah bitch! Magnets!
