Breaking Bad: Every Major Death Ranked
13. Walter White
Ending Breaking Bad was never going to be easy. Indeed, creator Vince Gilligan has found it impossible, returning to the well twice more for spin-offs and prequels. Walter White’s saga is one of the most acclaimed in TV history, and the eyes of the world were watching.
Was killing Walter White the right thing to do? Possibly. The nature of his death is handled beautifully, and is telling of the man he became. He bleeds out in a superlab, surrounded by his true love - the scientific equipment he used to make his fortune and build his name as a figure of immense power.
At the same time, it’s a bit of an easy way out. There were more interesting ways we could have left this character and this world - alone in the cabin in New Hampshire, perhaps, or in police custody, having to truly pay for his crimes.
The final episode gives Walter something close to a hero’s death, an odd choice after making him a true monster. That’s not to say that all TV villains must be punished accordingly, but the conclusion felt a little like misdirected affection towards an evil figure.
